Sir Richard Branson, who served as the keynote speaker, touched on environmental causes and the new President-elect Donald Trump saying, “We have a president in America now who doesn’t believe in climate change and it just means that every single business person, entrepreneur, and social worker has to work that much harder to redress the balance.” He proclaimed, “Screw it! Let’s save the ocean!” and went on to win a bid on a ten-foot 600 pound stunning shark sculpture by artist Clay Simpson for $27,000.

Proceeds from the gala support nonprofits aimed at building awareness around ocean conservation, including OceanEldersMaiTai Global and Mission Blue, the recipient of a $100,000 grant awarded this year by MaiTai Global. Highlights of the auction, organized by Director of Silent and Live Auctions, Colette Young, were a one-on-one with Richard Branson, and a dive with living legend National Geographic’s Dr. Sylvia Earle that fetched a whopping $40,000. Dr. Earle, gushed, “What a night — a veritable tsunami of passion and support for ocean conservation was on display at the Ocean Gala in San Francisco! Along with the entire Mission Blue team, I would like to say thank you again to MaiTai Global for their generous support of the Mission Blue expeditions program. Here’s to working more closely together in 2017, to explore the ocean and continue to inspire the world to care for its protection. Onward and downward!”

MaiTai global also featured The Extreme Virtual Reality Challenge, hosted by VR Fest, and showcased a VR Lounge interactive exhibit at this years gala. The first place winner Danny Copeland was awarded $10,000 for his project “The Mini Mantas of Maria”. Extreme Tech Challenge, another sub-event of MaiTai Global, announced the top ten semi-finalist in the XTC completion at the end of the night: Audicus, Canaria, Cloudwear, Cresilon, Emerge, Intezer Labs, MobileODT, ReDeTec, SWFL Filament and Vantage Robotics.

Maria Stermer, The Ocean Gala Chair, proudly stated, “This was a phenomenal gala.  I’m thrilled that everyone had a fantastic time; it’s a rare opportunity to see four world-class speakers for the ocean the same evening – Sir Richard Branson, Dr. Sylvia Earle, Bertrand Piccard and Rob Stewart. Standout items from the auctions included: a Piaget watch, a one-on-one with Oliver Stone, and a week on Sir Richard Branson’s private boat Necker Belle – sold to two lucky bidders for $50,000 each, the highest winning bids of the night.  The lovely performance by Yuan Yuan Tan and Tiit Helimets of the San Francisco Ballet, was symbolic of the first class setting that crystallized at the Palace Hotel Grand Ballroom.  Our community was incredibly generous and showed that we can make a difference when we’re brought together for a common cause we’re all passionate about.  The sold-out event with over four-hundred attendees from over ten countries was hosted by: Susi Mai and Bill Tai, co-founders of MaiTai Global, and Gigi Brisson, founder and CEO of OceanElders, who also drove the message of how important it is to act now to save our oceans.”

Sir Richard Branson, Patrick Dempsey, Domingo Zapata, Emilio Perez, Dee & Ricky, Alison Mosshart, Andre Saraiva, Jose Pasillas, Uri Dotan, Leo Fitzpatrick, Sam Snyder, to participate in creation of shoes auctioned off at The Ocean Gala

SAN FRANCISCO (November 18, 2016) – Select artists, celebrities, and entrepreneurs are helping raise awareness for ocean conservation through a Design Collaboration in which each of them will custom design a pair of shoes. Participants include entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson, actors Patrick Dempsey and Leo Fitzpatrick, The Kills singer-songwriter Alison Mosshart, Incubus drummer Jose Pasillas, designers Dee & Ricky and Sam Sydner, as well as world-renowned artists: Domingo Zapata, Emilio Perez, Uri Dotan, and Andre Saraiva. These one of a kind shoes will be auctioned off to raise funds for ocean conservation during the silent auction launching November 17th, 2016 for this year’s Second Annual Ocean Gala in San Francisco on December 3, 2016, produced by MaiTai Global and OceanElders.

Creation by José Pasillas drummer for alternative rock band, Incubus.

This collaboration, giving a unique crop of artists an opportunity to express their dedication to the cause, is organized by Colette Young, Director of the Live and Silent Auction for the gala, who notes, “All these influential people coming together to create their own signature designed shoes just underscores how vital it is for us to bring together people from all types of communities to stand up for ocean conservation efforts. Richard mentioned last week on his blog that we need to, “…help move the world’s leading economies from climate talk to climate action and to conserve the ocean from irreparable damage – perhaps two of the most daunting challenges the world has ever faced.”

Los Angeles Artist and Musician Jose Pasillas designed one of the pair of shoes and states, “I’m thrilled to be a part of The Ocean Gala Design Collaboration because I’m an avid supporter of environmental conservation efforts. My concept is one of nature—water and life—which we must fight to protect.”

Alison Mosshart, musician from duo The Kills, enjoyed the process: “ I harked back to that time as a child when everything is to be decorated, made unique, an expression of self. I had a day off on tour in Lisbon and sat on my hotel porch with the few art supplies I had, and started to draw. These shoes are covered in crowds, and conversations, amongst strangers. They are a coming together of people from all walks.”

The signature designs will be available to bid on through the Ocean Gala’s auction website, 501 Auctions, up until the Gala on December 3rd, 2016. A special thanks to Gabriel Schillinger and Jessica Stam for developing the Design Collaboration opportunity. The auction goes live online at www.501auctions.com/theoceangala on November 17th, 2016, and other auction items include donations from Sir Richard Branson, Oliver Stone, Josh Groban, and The Fray.

“We are proud to support one of the most prominent global leaders in conservation and Ocean Elder, Dr. Sylvia Earle, and the Mission Blue Hope Spot Initiative,” said The Ocean Gala Chair Maria Stermer.

This pledge to Mission Blue comes on the heels of several major advancements to create marine protected areas, including the announcement by President Obama to expand Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument in Hawaii creating the world’s largest marine protected area. Currently less than four percent of the ocean is protected in any way, and less than one percent is designated a “no-take” zone.

“There is still time to act if we make the next decade and century count for the ocean and wildlife within it,” said Dr. Sylvia Earle. “This generous $100,000 grant will fund voyages that explore our most critical ocean habitats to create awareness, foster partnerships and build public support for the creation of marine protected areas ‘Hope Spots’ across the globe.”
